Few people are aware that in Albuquerque’s very own backyard lies a sanctuary of solitude with the most expansive views of the city for miles. A place where one can pitch a tent, light a fire and relax in complete silence while looking down upon the city dwellers 10,000 feet below. This place is the Sandia Mountains.
Crossing the top of the Sandia’s is the 26 mile Crest Trail that runs from Tijeras to Placitas ranging in elevation from 6,240-10,640 feet. It is known to few that it is actually legal to backpack and camp along this trail. Campfires are permitted in most locations and there are even a few bear shelters along the way, (for humans, not animals).
Within the Sandia Mountain Wilderness there are several places to begin a backpacking excursion into the Cibola National Forest. The South crest trail beginning in Tijeras is just off the I-40/Tijeras exit and is located in Canyon Estates; this is also the Canyon Estates trailhead. From Placitas the North crest trail begins on the Tunnel Spring trailhead which is reached after exiting I-25/Placitas and continuing east to FR 231.
There are a number of trails along the Sandia Mountain foothills in northeast Albuquerque as well as on the east side of the mountain in Tijeras that intersect the trail. They include the Pino, Embudo, Embudito, Three Gun Spring, Bart’s and the 10K trails. A hiker’s desire for length in their excursion is all that matters in deciding which trail to begin from.
Wildlife is abundant all along this trail and throughout the Sandia Mountain wilderness and includes black bears, mountain lions, bobcats, rattlesnakes and various species of birds. Always take precaution when hiking in the wilderness. Food should be at least 100 yards away from sleeping quarters at night and hung high in a tree. Be aware of snakes in hot temperatures.
While it is nearing the cooler months now, this is still a doable trip especially due to the availability of decently priced 0-15 degree sleeping bags that weigh relatively little. These can be found at REI, Sportsman’s Warehouse and even Walmart stores. Temperatures can drop quickly so pay attention to sunset and be prepared. Prior to beginning your trek, always be sure to check forest service websites for closures, fire restrictions and weather reports. Enjoy!
