Quilting may be an old craft but new ideas are found everywhere in "Material Obsession: Modern Quilts With Traditional Roots," where bold colors, often in unusual combinations, along with new patterns, are the name of the game.
The two authors, Sarah Fielke and Kathy Doughty run Material Obsession, a popular shop in Sydney, Australia.
Quilters are encouraged to keep older patterns in mind, however. It's not that old is bad; it's just a reminder that new brings a lot to the quilting table, too. Designs relying on traditional patterns and shapes pop up throughout the book, even as individual creativity is encouraged.
Among the 23 projects here are Girlfriends Galore and Goodnight Sweet Prints. Each step is explained, along with the needed materials. The authors are quite supportive, especially of new quilters. They assure people worried about their lack of creativity or ability to mix colors not to worry. There are few rules.
The book is set up into three sections: easy, intermediate and advanced projects. Included are a list of quilting basics, such as terminology and resources needed to get started.
This is an excellent guide or gift for someone wanting to venture into a new creative project or in need of a little assurance along the way.
