Seriously, CU? Seriously?

April 22, 11:16 PM

I just found out that tuition is going up another nine percent next year. I'm going to have to take my wallet to a clinic, because I'm pretty sure it just got raped by CU.

“We haven’t taken this up with a cavalier attitude,” said Regent Paul Schauer about the tuition hike. “We’re not left with a whole lot of options.” (Daily Camera).

That's funny, I thought that there were five different options the regents got to choose from with tuition hikes from five percent to nine percent. Interesting how they just happened to pick the highest one. Thank you Governor Ritter and the legislature for at least putting a cap on it so it couldn't go any higher.

If this tuition increase continues, I'm not going to be left with a lot of options either. I am paying my own way through college. I have out the maximum amount of possible loans I can get on my own, and still have to pay about $500 dollars (not including books). I really want to get an education at a top-notch university, but soon I'm not going to be able to afford it. I thank the dissenting regents (all two of them) who voted no for students like me.

It's hypocritical how CU acts so concerned about promoting a diverse atmosphere, and then pulls stunts like this. If they keep raising their tuition like this, all that is going to be left are rich kids whose mommies and daddies are paying their way. Some diversity.

I guess I wouldn't be so opposed to the hikes if I felt my money was going to worthwhile things. No offense, but I could care less about Bud Peterson's "Flagship 2030" plan. Am I going to be there to reap the benefits? No. Make those future students pay more. They're the ones who will be on campus then.

I'm sorry if this makes absolutely no sense. I'm drained from working on projects and papers for finals and it's really hard to figure out why I'm even bothering to work my butt off when the University doesn't even care about its students.

On a lighter (and higher) note, 4/20 was Sunday afternoon. I guess Norlin Quad was packed; even more so than previous years. I didn't go because I had to study (that is my life. I haven't seen my friends in days) but I remember last year was pretty interesting. I don't smoke, but I had some friends who were really into it, so we went to the quad. I faked being sick and called in to work for that night and then had to hide from one of my managers who I saw there. There's also an awkward video of my friends and I on CollegeHumor.com, which was totally creepy because we didn't even know anyone was filming us. Not that I'm advocating smoking or anything, but I think just experiencing 4/20 (whichever way you choose) is something that must be done at least once while going to CU.
