University of Colorado journalism student Julia Yugel knows what's happening at the flagship university. See what she sees in the shadows of the Flatirons.
“Journalists are just people who like to gossip and get to do it as their job,” declared my teacher today in class.
At first, this statement offended me. Gossip? Me? Never. Okay, so maybe I like to know everything that is going on everywhere. On campus, at work, in my friend’s lives, etc. And maybe when I get this information, I like to tell other people. And perhaps my friends don’t tell me secrets because I’ll spill the beans. But that doesn’t make me a gossip.
Fine, maybe it does, but I think it’s time that we stop using the word “gossip” as a derogatory term.
In case you were wondering, I am finishing up my junior year at CU Boulder and am working on a double degree in news broadcast and political science.
The reason I chose to go to CU is kind of cheesy. I had one of those quintessential epiphany moments when I did a campus tour my senior year of high school.
My two friends and I were sitting on Norlin Quad after finishing a campus tour. The sun was shining, birds were chirping and students were laughing and playing Frisbee on the lawn.
As I sat there, I realized that I wanted CU to be my place. I felt like it was where I belonged. Plus, it was close enough to my parent’s house that I could go home for my mom to do my laundry, but too far away for my parents to drop by unannounced.
CU is not always portrayed in a positive light in the media. I think that sometimes people forget what a great place CU is. It’s one of the top public universities in the world, there are over 400 clubs and activities for students to participate in, and we have some of the best professors and classes (Do I sound like a walking ad yet?).
Sure it’s not all sunshine and roses; I do have my own qualms with CU (like the parking ticket I got one minute after I left my car), but overall I think it’s a great place to get an education. Plus, I figure I better like it since it’s going to take me four and a half years to get my degrees.
Anyways, I am proud to be your new eyes and ears around the CU campus. I promise to do my best to provide an interesting view of CU (the good and the bad) and what it’s like being a college student.
