CU is trying to revamp its image and President Benson wants the community to help.
In his October newsletter, Benson discusses the success of the CU system and attributes its accomplishment to the rebuilding of the CU reputation.
“Many recent efforts contribute to our improved reputation. My experience in business showed me that preventative maintenance helps head off problems. To that end, we have changed our admissions application and processes so we can be more selective. We examine if prospective students have had previous problems. We pay close attention to the role of our Athletic Department. I have met with Athletic Director Mike Bohn and coaches to be sure we are on the same page regarding the kind of students we recruit. We also reformed our tenure processes for faculty. Awarding tenure is a multimillion dollar, multiyear commitment. We are more careful in how we make those decisions and how we follow through on post-tenure review.”
CU sent out an email to all students urging them to take a quick survey about the university system and what can be improved. It’s not only for students, though. Everyone is encouraged to fill out the survey.
The eventual goal is to create a new image and reputation for the entire CU system, including UCD, UCCS and the Medical School.
I kind of forget about the other campuses that are part of the university.
I have a friend at UCD and we were discussing the campus differences. I asked her why she went to the Denver campus instead of Boulder.
She shrugged. “It’s cheaper, it’s not Boulder and I’m going to graduate with the same degree you are. I will still have a degree from the University of Colorado.”
She has a point, and I don’t know if I think that’s fair. To a CU-Boulder student, the other campuses don’t merit the same kind of prestige. The criteria to graduate aren’t even the same. The tuition is different. Should they be considered the same? I don’t know.
