Video on YouCrime brings down CU student

Okay so maybe there is no YouCrime website, but I'll bet that if there was, there would be some people dumb enough to post incriminating videos and pictures on it
Joseph Ramos, a CU freshman, was ticketed after the CU police saw a YouTube video of him lighting a Roman Candle firework outside of Sewell residence hall on Tuesday.
This was the first time that CU police have used YouTube to catch students doing a crime, but Boulder police have been known to use Facebook and Myspace from time to time.
Judd Golden, director of the Boulder County chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, said there’s some question as to whether police should be using the sites for evidence.
“There’s the question of how far should law enforcement be going to gather evidence,” Golden said. “And the ACLU always comes down on the side of privacy.”
But, He conceded, “Once a person uses a public forum, you have to expect that people can take that information and use it for or against you.” (Daily Camera).
Yeah, no kidding. I have some advice for everyone out there. IF YOU ARE GOING TO GO AND DO SOMETHING ILLEGAL, DON’T POST IT ONLINE.
Posting videos and pictures is a new trend, but as some people are quickly discovering, it is one that can come back to bite you in the ass.
Police will check online profiles to verify ages on drivers licenses when underage people try to use fake IDs.
On 4/20 a few years ago, police took pictures of smokers, posted them online, and offered rewards for anyone who identified the people.
College resume workshops are now advising students to monitor their Facebook profiles and remove potentially damaging information because more and more employers are checking these as part of their hiring processes.
None of these things are good. It may seem like an innocent idea to post those awesome drunk pictures on your profile but apparently now it could lead to the CU police department showing up on your doorstep.
Maybe Ramos should be spending less time lighting fireworks and more time studying for finals like the rest of us (Sorry. Finals are making me angry and bitter).
