When people talk about the joys of literature, they're usually talking about classic books or new best-selling phenomenons. However, there is a little secret that could save people thousands of dollars in therapy. Whenever I'm sad/mad/upset, I read children's or young adult books. They're well written and the problems in there are so frivolous that they somehow make me feel better. I'm just explaining this to give you a little backstory on how I, a 27 year old, happened to read The Bobbsey Twins.
Usually I read the Baby-Sitters Club or Nancy Drew, but the other day I was at the library and saw my old friends, the bobbsey twins!! For those who don't know, the bobbsey twins are two sets of twins - Nan and Bert, 12 yrs old, and Flossie and Freddie, 6 yrs old, who solve mysteries together. However, after reading one last night, I have a few notes:
-- young flossie's dad gave her a nickname. princess? no. angel? no. "my little fat fairy?" yes. um, seriously? this is going to cost her at least one eating disorder and quite a few therapists later on. Thanks, dad.
--bert, nan (nan? really?), flossie, and freddie go to Washington D.C. to find....... stolen jewelry? No. Millions of dollars stolen from a bank robbery? No. A politician's missing set of ethics? No. They go to find a CREAM PITCHER from a tea set. Seriously? And of course it was super easy to find in a huge city. When they go visit the woman who bought it, the woman just gives it to them. Not likely. in today's world, she would be asking for at least 2 mil in punitive damages for the loss of this pitcher.
--As the fabulous foursome frolic in our nation's capital, they are frequently unaccompanied by an adult of any kind. And there we have lawsuit number two. Unescorted children - seriously. If that really happened, nan and flossie would be turning tricks in no time, and bert and freddie would discover the joys of drugs.
In conclusion, the book was cute and quaint. And by the time I'd finished reading it, I was laughing too hysterically at the twins to give another thought to my own problems.
