When the Arizona Cardinals selected Ohio State running back Chris "Beanie" Wells in the first round of last spring's NFL draft, the goal was to strengthen the team's running game. To this point in the season, things haven't gone according to plan.
Through five games this season, Wells hasn't gained more than 44 yards in any single game and has had to watch as the Cardinals continue to rely almost exclusively on their vertical game.
Sunday night against the Giants, Wells' talent began to show as he rushed for 67 yards in 14 carries as the Cardinals took a major step forward with a 24-17 victory on the road in New York.
Wells, who is slowly getting the bulk of the carries, scored his first career NFL touchdown in the second quarter, a 13-yard run through two Giants defenders for the Cardinals first score of the game. The rookie's consistent bursts, nearly five yards per carry against the Giants, helped give a spark to the Cardinal running game, an area where the team continues to struggle.
The victory, combined with the San Francisco 49ers loss at Houston earlier Sunday, gives the Cardinals sole possession of first place in the NFC West. It was the Cardinals third consecutive road win this season and first Arizona win over the New York Giants since November, 2004. Interestingly, the starting quarterback for the Giants in that game was Kurt Warner.
Wells will have the opportunity to build on this game next Sunday when the Cardinals host the Carolina Panthers, ranked just 26th in the league against the run.
