The Christopher Street PATH Station has become one of those necessary evils of commuting to the West Village.
Upon exiting the wind tunnel station and scaling four flights of stairs before breakfast, many commuters probably don't even notice the quaint little cafe just two doors down. This is why, day after day, a man in an neon orange vest stands outside to serve harried travelers a nice shots of black coffee in small paper cups, hoping to attract visitors, which I imagine is difficult during a recession (or during rush hour in general).
After taking many a free shot of coffee, I decided I should go in and actually buy something, and I'm glad I did.
The bright green and white interior of the cafe provides patrons with a well-deserved sanctuary from the busy street outside. I ordered an $8 grilled chicken pesto panini on whole wheat focaccia bread (yes, apparently there is such a thing). Then I ordered three giant muffins because they were just too damn pretty to resist. And THEN I threw a hot apple cider on the tab, just for good measure. Everything totaled up to be about $20.
The sandwich was small, yet delectable and filling. Any hunger I had leftover could have been easily been satisfied by a pistachio walnut, banana blueberry or pumpkin almond muffin, but I decided to save those for breakfast.
Overall, the cafe was a nice place to relax, read the Metro, and have a quick dinner before heading back to New Jersey.
And the muffins? Fluffy, flavorful, and delicious. I'm going to have a hard time finding the will to eat my instant oatmeal after discovering those.
The Path Cafe also has a wide selection on salads, sandwiches, and other treats I can't wait to try. Stop in and grab a coffee at 131 Christopher Street. (That's right. Quit taking the free ones and walking away).
