One of the most stable positions on the 49ers roster is the center position. In fact, the 49ers don't have much of a battle entering this 2009 season for the center position.
There are only two players that are listed at center and Eric Heitmann looks to be taking all the offensive snaps this season.
Currently on roster:
Heitmann started at guard in 2005 but played six games at center. Since then, he has been the team's starting center. He missed two games in 2006, but aside from that, he has been at center ever since.
Last year, the 49ers signed Heitmann to a three year extension that guarantees his stay with the 49ers until 2011. The signing (along with tackle Joe Staley's signing last week) shows that the 49ers are trying to stabilize their offensive line for the future.
Heitmann's backup is Cody Wallace. Wallace was drafted last year by the 49ers but with Heitmann's contract extension, it's pretty much guaranteed that we won't see Wallace start unless Heitmann struggles terribly or gets hurt.
But for Wallce, he is still young and has been waiting for his chance. He was inactive for every game last year and might be the same case for him this year.
Wallace's best chance to make the roster is if Heitmann's play goes down. That isn't likely, but maybe in the long run, Wallace might get his chance with the 49ers. But right now, this is Heitmann's spot to keep.
