As reported yesterday, the Raiders have signed former Cowboy defensive end, linebacker Greg Ellis. Ellis was released earlier this month and there was some speculation that Ellis might be a great fit for the 49ers.
Obviously, it was not to be. But this might be a good sign anyway since the 49ers are looking to give linebacker Manny Lawson the best opportunity to succeed. Even though the signing of Ellis to a 3-4 defense makes more sense than with the Raiders, the 49ers would have had a cluster at the position.
Would it have been wise to halt the development of Lawson with the signing of Ellis? And at the defensive end position, I think that Demetric Evans would have been a fine addition and adding Ellis would just make that signing of Evans moot.
But now Ellis is the Raiders problem. The only time the 49ers will see the Raiders this year will be the annual preseason matchup. At least Ellis didn't join a team the 49ers have to face in the regular season.
But speaking of the 49ers schedule, there were some transactions around the league that involved some former 49ers.
Former 49ers wide receiver Brandon Lloyd (known for his rapping touchdown celebrations) has been signed by the Broncos. That means that Lloyd and former 49ers head coach Mike Nolan (now the Broncos defensive coordinator) have joined forces again.
The 49ers host the Broncos in the first preseason game of the year.
The Atlanta Falcons have signed former 49ers center Jeremy Newberry. Newberry was one of the best centers the 49ers have had in recent years and even though he suffered injuries throughout his time here, he still played at a top level.
The 49ers will host the Falcons in Week 5 of the season. I don't know Newberry will be a starter, but it will be nice to see him back at The 'Stick.
I think the biggest news that everyone is still buzzing about is Brett Favre. After last night's appearance on "Joe Buck Live", can we safely say that if Favre is healthy, he'll join the Vikings? Without Favre, the Vikings are a question mark at quarterback. With Favre, they have a great chance of being Super Bowl contenders. And of course, the media will be all over this whole thing throughout the year.
The 49ers will visit the Vikings early in the year and well, it will be tough to defend a healthy Favre. Last year, Favre's shoulder made his last appearance at Candlestick Park a loss. Imagine if he was healthy, he could have helped the Jets win that game. But that was only if he was healthy. I still wonder how healthy he'd be in a few weeks.
