The 49ers specials teams doesn't feature a whole lot of competition. But due to the fact that the 49ers have relied on their specials teams a whole lot these past few seasons, I think it's appropriate that we get to know the special teamers little.
Currently on roster:
The signing of Allen Rossum last year was rather a surprise move for me. I didn't know what Rossum had left in his tank after so many seasons. But as the second all-time leader in kick return yards, it was a risk worth taking.
Last year, Rossum provided tremendous field position for the 49ers with his kick returns and also gave us this memorable moment on national television.
With Rossum's return, you would think that the kick return situation would be handled. Actually, it might not be the case. Last year, Delanie Walker got his fair share of kick returns and showed some life in a preseason game against the Chargers.
I'm throwing in Micheal (yes, it's spelled like that) Spurlock because of this. Spurlock probably will be used as a receiver only on offense, but if in any case they need a kick returner, we can look to Spurlock for experience.
The punting situation for the team is pretty simple: Andy Lee is really good. In fact, Lee may be one of the best punters in the game. His career 44.4 yards per punt is quite impressive and could be the best punter in the league (aside from Oakland's Shane Lechler).
Unless kicker Joe Nedney gets hurt, I don't see Romero making any impact on the team. However, it is good to have Nedney's reliable foot on the team for another year. The San Jose State alum has provided the team with numerous clutch, game-winning field goals in the past few years and if the 49ers are going to try to make this playoff push, they will need the sure-foot of Nedney.
Not much has changed on the special teams front for the 49ers. Aside from maybe a new face due to injury, I expect the 49ers special teams to be steady like they have in years past.
