After a week of OTAs, the 49ers have concluded the first session of camp with the whole roster. Head coach Mike Singletary was pleased with what he saw.

“The most important thing is the guys have a feeling and an understanding of what we’re trying to accomplish,” he said of his team’s progression. “And it’s about getting better, taking advantage of every opportunity that we have to come out here to get better. I think they have a good feel for where we want to go, and we’re just going to build on it.”

But with the first week of OTAs done, the 49ers have at least given themselves an opportunity to meet up with the majority of the roster on the field. And with the signing of Dre Bly to replace the injured Walt Harris, the 49ers now look extremely serious to contend for the NFC West title.

The 49ers website has a nice breakdown with lots of quotes from players on their experience this week. But from what I can tell, the team looks very confident in the players and the performances.

One thing that I wonder about the team is the offense and how it would fit in with the players on the roster. The offense seems to fit very well for the players, especially tight end Vernon Davis.

Davis had been used minimally in the past few seasons, but it looks like he will be used in some 10-15 yard routes. With that, I would hope that Davis becomes a more vital part of the team's offense.

But right now, two things come to mind. On one hand, the 49ers running game will be a very important part of the team's offense. The OTAs wasn't so kind to rookie Glen Coffee. Matt Barrows said that he noticed that Coffee was galloping a lot in his running. Maybe he will fix it next time around for OTAs. But Coffee isn't guaranteed a second string position on the team, so players like Thomas Clayton could take advantage of this.

Also, the battle for Walt Harris' spot is up for grabs between Tarell Brown, Shawntae Spencer and newly signed Dre Bly. Brown and Bly are probably the two players that could end up fighting for the position. Right now, I would think that Bly would get it but there is a lot of camp left.

By the time the next part of OTAs rolls around, I'll get more in-depth on the rookie free agents as some of them will be battling for a roster spot.
