The NFL has evolved numerous times over the past seasons, but no trend is more apparent than the two-back system. Most times, a team would feature one running back to carry the bulk of the carries while the backup running back will be in mainly just for third down conversions. However, in the past few seasons, we have seen teams use two feature running backs in their attacks.
Most notably in recent years were the Jaguars, which then featured Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew. The Giants also employed a two-back system. But with such talent in the backfield, they added a third back giving Ahmad Bradshaw, Derrick Ward and Brandon Jacobs the nickname "Earth, Wind and Fire"-- each back having a specialty in their attack.
The 49ers are hoping to start some of their own ground attack magic with third round pick Glen Coffee.
Coffee's running game consisted of downhill running and amazing cutbacks. I had not seen a lot of Coffee while he was at Alabama, but from highlight clips, I am very impressed with his ability to find the holes in the line. Even though he sits at 209 pounds, he might bulk up a little. His style of running is somewhat similar to what Gore has presented these past three seasons.
Both backs have quick legs and are also powerful. Gore has great hands out of the backfield and even though Coffee had only 16 catches last year, I've been told that his hands are also very reliable.
The two-back system, however, is like a Ying and a Yang whereas both backs are different in style that they actually expand the team's running game. One back and pound the inside and the other back and spread the field with his speed. But with these two, I am not too worried. Gore can and should maintain his style of play and Coffee and run the same way. But with Coffee's youth and versatility, I wouldn't be surprised if the 49ers decide to put him out to try different things.
Maybe Coffee can run more plays right up the middle while Gore gets more sweep plays. Coffee could carry a bit more while Gore could catch more balls in the flat. Or vice versa. There actually area lot of options that the 49ers can open up with Coffee and Gore in the backfield.
The expectation for Coffee is that he will show his worth during training camp and secure the #2 running back spot in the depth chart. Once he gets there, that's where the new 49ers running game will take place.
