When the 49ers signed DE Demetric Evans earlier this month, I thought it was the smartest signing the 49ers had made in the off-season. But when the 49ers signed RT Marvel Smith on Friday to a two-year deal, that changed my mind.
First of all, Smith's signing probably means that he will end up being the starting right tackle. Jonas Jennings' time in San Francisco is officially over with his release. Smith should be able to win the starting job over Adam Snyder and Barry Sims. Also, I think I like having Smith at right guard over the other two.
Smith has had a pretty solid career with the Steelers before signing with the 49ers. He started on the Steelers championship team in 2005 when they defeated the Seahawks in Super Bowl XL. He was physically able to play in this past Super Bowl, but was on injured reserve.
Also, in 2006, he started every game and paved the way for RB Willie Parker's 1,494 rushing yards (third best in Steelers history). I think RB Frank Gore would like that.
