EDIT: 4:33PM- WR Brandon Jones should arrive down in San Jose pretty soon. However, he will not meet with head coach Mike Singletary until tomorrow morning. In the meantime, he will have his physical after his arrival. The 49ers, since 2005, have signed all players that have visited them during the free agency signing period. This could be it tomorrow morning.
- I will recap all of today's happenings later tonight. I doubt there will be anymore 49ers news today. But I'll still keep you all posted.

EDIT: 3:09pm- FOXSports.com is reporting that the 49ers and LB Takeo Spikes have agreed on a two-year contract. YES!!!

EDIT: 2:22PM- Matt Barrows is reporting that the 49ers have an interest in Broncos defensive end Kenny Peterson. Peterson was drafted by the Packers in 2003 and played for the Broncos last year, finishing with three sacks.

EDIT:12:36PM- WR Brandon Jones is on his way to Santa Clara and is expected to arrive this afternoon. The team has said that they will not sign any player unless they have met with him and feel that they are the right fit.
Also, here is a really good piece on TJ Houshmandzadeh by Mike Sando. It sheds some light on his chance of coming to San Francisco.

EDIT: 10:38AM- The 49ers have agreed to a three-year, $5 million ($1.5 million guaranteed) deal with fullback Moran Norris. Norris was with the 49ers when Frank Gore had his two best seasons. His return provides the ideal fullback, blocker the team needed for the new running offense.

The first day of the free agent market is going to bring fun and exciting times for the 49ers. I'll run down everything important that will happen today, whether or not it will affect the 49ers.

The 49ers have already signed a free agent today-- their own free agent. Kick returner Allen Rossum is reported to have re-signed with the 49ers. Terms of the deal have not been confirmed, but this is a good sign for the team. The 49ers had improved their special teams with Rossum and hopefully, we can see more of things like this.

The 49ers haven't signed anyone else today, but they are scheduling some meetings with players. And trust me, they won't do anything crazy like that seven-year, $100 million contract that Albert Haynesworth just got.

  • The 49ers are linked to Titans WR Brandon Jones. Jones is a speed demon and could help stretch the field for the team. The 49ers are scheduled to have him visit the team today. The last two years the 49ers visited a player on the first day, that player did not leave without a contract.
  • Check out this YouTube video of him.
  • 49ers DT Ronald Fields is gathering interest from the Rams and Broncos. Fields probably won't return.
  • 49ers TE Billy Bajema is gathering interest from the Rams and Jets. The 49ers might want to keep him, but we'll see how this unfolds.
  • No news on WR TJ Houshmandzadeh or FB Moran Norris.
  • The 49ers are looking to schedule a visit with Cowboys DE Chris Canty next week. However, he is going to meet with the Titans, Redskins and Seahawks. He can fit well in the 3-4 scheme.
  • The 49ers may also have interest in Redskins DE Demetric Evans. He may come cheaper than Canty.
  • The Patriots have agreed to a contract with RB Fred Taylor. OK, I guess I can check him off my list.
  • LB Bart Scott has agreed to go to the Jets. What's Ray Lewis to do now?
  • As reported yesterday, the Dolphins have locked up safeties Yeremiah Bell and Gibril Wilson. I wanted Bell!
  • Matt Barrows says that Cowboys TE Tony Curtis is on the 49ers' radar. If Billy Bajema leaves, the 49ers will use Curtis to replace him. No scheduled visit yet for Curtis (who is also getting interest from the Rams and Jets).

That's all we know for now. Keep it here for more info throughout the day.
