Among many disparaging comments that have been said since the Tea Party first took up their signs on April 15th, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said probably the most memorable. She had called the Tea Party movement “Astroturf” - having no substance and no ability to grow. In her arrogance, however, she had forgotten that the people who make up the Tea Parties are the very ones who made this country great by innovation, determination and hard work. It appears that disparagement has shifted Conservative America into hyper-drive, and none more representative than the activities of one of our local Tea Parties, the Clear Lake Tea Party.

The Clear Lake Tea Party had a Committee Sign Up Meeting recently that was attended by close to 100 people. The attendees represented the full spectrum of the non-partisan populous – employees, employers, the unemployed, students and retirees. The majority had never participated in politics before but came to the meeting with a singular intent on volunteering their time to combat the growing fears and concerns of the current government. Everyone in attendance had committed their skills to at least one committee, some two or more, fully aware of the hard work ahead of them.

During this meeting, Lisa Gonzalez, one of the seven initial founders of the Clear Lake Tea Party, stated, that in order to change the Congressional Demographics in the 2010 Election, the Tea Party needs to strengthen its numbers by seeking out like-minded individuals. She continued by saying that there is a large number of people in the area who are still unaware of the existence of an area Tea Party or of any local Tea Party events. To this end, she stated, the most immediate goal is to make the Tea Party known to the public by connecting with neighbors, businesses and schools to disprove, once and for all, the ‘angry mob’ label that was given by Washington DC and the ‘fringe’ media.

In addition to increasing its numbers, an official Tea Party website is underway that will connect all Texas Tea Parties together, and eventually, the Tea Parties in all 50 States. Helping with this massive undertaking, Dale Robbins, another of ‘the initial seven’, stated that the Tea Parties’ have begun communicating with each other and making plans to combine forces and consolidate resources. He explained that the Tea Party website, to which all individual Tea Parties can link, will not only provide information, speakers and events at every Tea Party’s fingertips, but will help support the creation of new Tea Parties and assist prospective new members to locate the Tea Party nearest them. The projected launch date for this website is in four to six weeks.

In the meantime, you can get on the mailing list by going to the Clear Lake Tea Party website. Also, there is a General Meeting, on Tuesday, October 20th, at the Webster Civic Center, 311 Pennsylvania Street, Webster, TX 77598 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Speakers include Cheryl Johnson, Galveston County Tax Assessor Collector and Art Bedford on behalf of the Initiative for Texas. Anyone who believes that Government is out of control and would like to make a difference is welcome.
