John Allen Muhammad is accused of killing 10 people in 2002

John Allen Muhammad will be executed by injection today in Jarratt, Virginia.

Muhammad and a teen accomplice went on a shooting spree in 2002 that resulted in 10 deaths. Victims were from Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

Muhammad is at the Greensville Correctional Center and his attorneys have asked the Governor of Virginia, Tim Kaine, to commute his sentence to life in prison. Attorneys state that Muhammad is mentally ill.

On Monday, however, the U.S. Supreme Court turned down his final appeal.

The teenager who assisted Muhammad in the killing spree is Lee Boyd Malvo and is serving a life sentence in Virginia.  They are suspected of other deaths in Louisiana, Alabama, and Arizona.

Some of the victims of Muhammad’s rampage will be present for the execution tonight. Cheryll Witz, whose father Jerry Taylor, was killed on a golf course in Tucson, Arizona, said “He basically watched my dad breathe his last breath. Why shouldn’t I watch his last breath?”

Malvo and Muhammad were arrested on October 24, 2002 at a Maryland rest stop. They had configured the trunk of their car so that one of them could lie in the trunk and shoot at people through a hole in the car.
