Lisa Nowak, 46, the ex-astronaut who was accused of attempted kidnapping among other charges, pled guilty to burglary and battery instead of going to trial next month in Florida. She was given a light sentence, one year’s probation, in return.

You may remember that in February, 2007, ex-astronaut Lisa Nowak drove from Houston to Orlando to confront her ex’s new love interest, Colleen Shipman.

Nowak, married to Richard Nowak, had been involved with Bill Oefelein, a former space shuttle pilot. When she found out that Oefelein was involved with Shipman, she snapped.

Wearing diapers in order to avoiding stopping during the 900 mile drive, Nowak brought a bag full of items including a BB pistol, gloves, rubber tubing, garbage bags, a 2-pound drilling hammer and a folding knife.

At the airport in Orlando, Nowak waited for Shipman in the baggage claim area for an hour. Nowak then followed her through the airport but Shipman was able to get into her car before Nowak could harm her.

Later police found Nowak’s bag with the questionable items and took her into custody.

In addition to the one year probation, Judge Marc Lubet of Orange County sentenced Nowak with community service, court costs, anger management and counseling.

Judge Lubet also ordered to Nowak to stay “completely away” from Shipman who lives with Oefelein in Alaska.

Judge Lubet had Nowak face Shipman in court and apologize. "I'm glad to have the opportunity to apologize to Miss Shipman," Nowak said. "I am sincerely sorry. I hope very much that we can all move forward from this with privacy and peace."

Shipman was quoted as saying to the court, “Please don’t be fooled. Lisa Nowak is a very good actress.”

Shipman also stated, “She was going to kill me. It was in her eyes, a blood-chilling expression of limitless rage and glee.”
