Are you an avid bike rider? Or maybe you like riding for fun and enjoying the scenery. Either way, Louisville has some awesome bike trails worth looking into before the winter weather sets in. Check out the following:
Joe Creason Park - Joe Creason Park is located at the intersection of Trevillian and Newburg, right across from the Louisville Zoo (the Trevillian side) and Bellarmine (Newburg side). Situated on 68 acres, Joe Creason Park opened in 1968, and just as recently as 2007, completed a 1.5 paved multi-use path. Although it’s relatively short in distance, the bike trail at Joe Creason has two very steep hills within.
Cherokee Park - Cherokee Park is a breathtaking area located in the Highlands section of Louisville (east central end). Bikers can enjoy a 2.4 mile scenic loop. Cherokee Park is one of Louisville’s most popular parks boasting over 500,000 visits per year.
Shawnee Park – Shawnee Park is located in the west end of Louisville and is situated on more than 200 acres. One of the nicest features is that the Ohio River runs alongside, and there is a scenic path for bikers and walkers alike.
There are several bike trails in Louisville that are older and some which are still being completed. Here’s a list of some of those trails:
Beargrass Bike Path – Beargrass was Louisville’s very first bike path created in 1980. It connects the Belvedere to Waterfront Park and is 1.3 miles in distance.
Louisville Loop – The Louisville Loop project is only partially completed but once it is promises to be a major perk of the city. The Louisville Loop will circle with entire city upon completion, comprising some 110 miles. At the time of this writing, 30 miles have been completed along the western waterfront.
Bike riders will be interested in the Riverwalk which was the first section of the Loop to be completed. The Riverwalk is a 6.9 mile bike trail (jogging too) that runs along the Ohio River from the Belvedere to Chickasaw Park. It also goes through Lanham and Shawnee Parks and along a small section of city streets in Portland (less than ½ mile). Mile markers are placed on the trail.
Also part of the Riverwalk is The Levee Trail (runs from Riverview Park to Farnsley-Moremen House to Lees Lane). Bikers can enjoy this trail as they head to the Mill Creek Trail which is 10 miles in length. Mill Creek connects the Levee Trail and the Riverwalk.
