In April 2007, Mike Penner, a veteran Los Angeles Times sportswriter announced he would begin hormone treatment and returning to work as Christine Daniels.

In his words, "I am a transsexual sportswriter. It has taken more than 40 years, a million tears and hundreds of hours of soul-wrenching therapy for me to work up the courage to type those words."

He began a blog chronicling this journey; "Woman in Progress."

In October 2008, he quietly returned to his male name after a leave of absence. He was found dead in his home last Friday. Suicide is the suspected cause of his death.

I can never know what transpired in the solitude of this persons heart.  I can only be saddened at this news.
