Cycling is becoming such a mainstream topic that a suburban Connecticut museum is mounting an exhibition devoted to bike rides.
The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum will offer “Bike Rides: The Exhibition” from September 26 through January 3.
Located in Ridgefield, a short drive from Manhattan, the museum will feature about 30 “multidisciplinary” works from around the world, described as both “functional cycles” and bicycle–inspired sculpture and video.
These include tricked–out vintage rides of the Brooklyn–based Puerto Rico Schwinn Club; the cast–bronze cycles of Subodh Gupta; as well as artworks or bikes from such luminaries as Lance Armstrong and David Bryne.
To celebrate the exhbit the museum will hold a bike fest on Oct. 4 It invites cyclists to join "Le Tour d'Aldrich" -- organized rides for for all abilities from11:30 am to 1:30 pm
Admission to the museum is $7 for adults, $4 for seniors and college students, free on Tuesdays. The Aldrich is at 258 Main Street in Ridgefield. Phone 203.438.4519 The museum is open Tuesdays through Sundays noon to 5 p.m.
It is about an hour drive from midtown Manhattan, but alternatively, you might take your bike on a Metro North train to Katonah in Westchester County, New York (the trip is typically 80 or so minutes), and then ride east to Ridgefield.
