For some riders, a fun bike ride can be ruined by a minor accident  or a flat or that they cannot fix. If you ride with that fear in the back of your mind, you might want to look into Bicycle Assistance Insurance.

You can buy nationwide emergency bike assistance insurance through the Better World Club for $39.95 a year. That does not cover your car, too, just the bike. And the service does not mean someone will fix a flat on the side of the road. It only means that a truck will pick you up and transport you to someplace better than the middle of an open road or highway, provided it is not more than 30 miles away.

There are additional charges. The yearly cost entitles insurance owners to two such calls per year for one member. Coverage for others in your family costs $17 per additional person. And there is a one-time $12  nonrefundable sign-up fee. On the plus side, you get a free membership to the League of American Bicyclists.

This all may sound like overkill to some riders and too little benefit for too much money for others. But if you ride a lot away from your home or on lonely roads,, the peace of mind might be worth it.
