The 2009- 2010 season at the Omaha Community Playhouse is off to an exciting start with plays and musicals that afford any theatergoer a multitude of choices. Whether you like sprightly, upbeat fare like Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat or dense, serious dramas such as Death of a Salesman, you will find what you are looking for at the Playhouse. Since many theatergoers like an idea of what they are purchasing tickets to see, here is a rundown of the season they have planned and a short description of each entertainment.
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat - Playing now through November 1st: Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's jubilant musical about the biblical story of Joseph who survives many trials to emerge as the Pharaoh's right hand man and dream interpreter, is a crowd pleaser full of memorable songs in styles that range from country to disco, from rock-a-billy to vaudeville. Tim-Abou-Nasr stars as the optimistic title character and Melanie Walters plays the big-voiced narrator. With an optimistic message and a family friendly premise, this is a great show for entire brood.
Almost Maine (October 23 - November 22): A touching and unique collection of short plays by John Cariani, Almost Maine is a gentle play about life and romance set in a town in northern Maine. The piece explores the quirky denizens of this charming hamlet, as they reel the audience into their unique world . This is a great play for a date night, one not to missed with that special someone.
A Christmas Carol (November 20 - December 23): The perennial favorite is back, complete with its usual, lush production design and its delightful, atmospheric music. The story of Ebenezer Scrooge, the miserly curmudgeon who has a distaste for the Christmas season is transformed by visitors from the spirit world. Affectionately adapted from the Charles Dicken's classic by Charles Jones, A Christmas Carol is a timeless, holiday confection not to be missed. Great for the whole family!
Yesterday and Today (December 4 - December 3): Playhouse favorite Billy McGuigan stars in this interactive Beatles experience, a tribute to the music of one of the world's greatest and most influential bands. Wax nostalgic as you journey through a juke box of The Beatles' hits, humming your favorite tunes. A great show for rock music fans, Beatles' enthusiasts and for those who prefer a high energy evening of theater.
Cheaper By the Dozen - January 22 - February 14: It's the 1920's and the sizable Gilbreth family struggle to deal with their militant father who runs the household like he runs his factory. Full of wonderful family comedy and insightful commentary about the ties that bind, Cheaper By the Dozen is a treat for anyone who has survived the experience of family. The play is based on the book by Frank Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth, adapted for the stage by Christopher Sergel.
Death of a Salesman (February 19 - March 2): Arthur Miller's great American tragedy comes to the Playhouse. The story of traveling salesman Willy Loman, who has spent 36 years on the road, believing himself to be a great salesman, is a sad tale of missed opportunity and bad life choices. An intense play that celebrates the anonymous everyman who struggles his whole life to do what is right for his family, only to come up short in the end.
All Shook Up (March 5 - April 3): If you are a fan of the music of Elvis Presley, this is the show for you. Loosely based on William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night (in plot and character similarities only), All Shook Up tells the tale of an Elvis-like drifter who happens onto a small, Midwestern town, creating wacky complications of love. Full of zany characters and a great score of Elvis standards, All Shook Up is a hilarious romp for the whole family.
Mister Roberts (April 16 - May 19): Thomas Heggen and Joshua Logan's classic play is about sailors on a Navy cargo vessel during World War II, stuck in the Pacific with nothing to do. This comedy/drama is full of unconventional characters. A classic play that deserves to be done more often than it is. Don't miss this one!
Awesome 80's Prom (April 30 - May 30): Like being transported into a John Hughes movie, Awesome 80's Prom flashes back to 1989 and all the wonderful cliches of the time. An interactive experience conceived by Ken Davenport, we meet the stereotypes of the period: the jock, the nerd, the cheerleader, everything but Molly Ringwald.
Fiddler on the Roof (May 28 - June 27): The Playhouse crowns its 85th season with the musical masterpiece Fiddler on the Roof, by Joseph Stein, Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick. Truly a classic of the musical stage, it tells the story of the Jewish milkman Tevye, a traditionalist who has five daughters. We experience the difficulties of parenthood as Tevye must wrestle with his own beliefs as each daughter wishes to marry in a fashion that is outside the norms of their tradition. Soon, he struggles to maintain his own identity as the outside world forces him to change. The plot is both heavy and comical, with great humor, lovely music and an inspirational conclusion.
