MOSAL, IRAQ - The Fourth of July is a holiday where friends and family gather around barbeque's's, backyard picnics and fireworks displays to celebrate the birth of our great nation.

But for many it means another day overseas fighting for
what this this great nation is about in the war zones of Iraq and Afghanistan

These soldiers are the defenders of the principals of democracy that George Washington and Thomas Jefferson and all our other forefather's fought for.

To thank these veterans, five current and former coaches including Steelier great Bill Cowher traveled to the Persian Gulf to meet and greet service members as part of an inaugural USO-NFL coaches tour.

While Cowher took some flak during the Stanley Cup playoffs for ringing the bell during the Hurricanes home contests when they played the Penguins, his love for Pittsburgh was once again on display during an autograph session as hundreds of soldiers waited, with terrible towels flying.

It prompted Cowher, who was in the presence of some pretty good company to proclaim Iraq to be "Steelers Nation."

Cowher spent 15 seasons as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he amassed 149 regular season wins highlighted by a victory in Super Bowl XL. Cowher led the Steelers to eight division titles and 10 playoff appearances during his tenure in Pittsburgh and his 12 postseason victories are the seventh most in NFL history.

Cowher also tied legendary NFL coach Paul Brown by guiding the Steelers to the playoffs in his first six seasons as head coach.

A native of Crafton, PA, Cowher was a linebacker and special teams standout for the Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns before moving into the coaching ranks. Cowher’s father served in the Air Force from 1940-1945.

Prior to taking off on the tour, Cowher had this to say.

“I am really excited for this trip as I have a tremendous appreciation for our troops and greatly value how they protect our freedom each day,” said Cowher. “Anything I can do to help inspire and thank our troops in anyway will be a tremendous honor for me.”

Other coaches including Cowher included current Tennessee Titan mentor Jeff Fisher, New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh and former Tampa coach Jon Gruden.
