Derrin Nettles recovered a fumble and rumbled 85 yards for a touchdown to seal Morehouse's victory over Miles College in the SIAC finale for both teams Saturday.
A few hours later, the Tigers (7-3, 6-3) found out that their season was really over as they were passed over for the Division II playoffs in favor of West Alabama. West Alabama (7-4) defeated no. 1 North Alabama in triple overtime.
Morehouse defeated Miles College (3-8, 3-7) 30-14 behind freshman runningback David Carter, who had 181 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries.
When asked if the playoff selection result was disappointing, Morehouse head coach Richard Freeman told Hal Lamar of Onnidan Online, "Man, that is an understatement."
"I'm happy with the 7-3 season," Freeman later said. "We played tough opponents and the ball didn't always bounce our way all the time. But, I won't look back on it. I'll just go out in the off-season and try to build a bigger, stronger football team."
Junior quarterback Carlton Hill paced Miles with 128 passing yards and a touchdown. He also ran seven times for 50 yards.
