MEAC roundup: FAMU survives, stays in title hunt

Philip Sylvester's 40-yard run in the third quarter put Florida A&M up 24-21 and the Rattlers held on to defeat North Carolina A&T 31-27 to keeps it MEAC title hopes alive Saturday.

LeRoy Vann returned a punt 51 yards to put FAMU (7-2, 5-1) up 31-21, for what turned out to be the game winner.

Dontavious Payne scored from eight yards out in the fourth quarter but the conversion failed and the Aggies (4-5, 2-4) fell short.

FAMU, no. 23 in the latest FCS Coaches Poll, needs victories against Hampton and Bethune-Cookman, and losses by South Carolina State to Morgan State and NC A&T to clinch the MEAC title.  The Rattlers lost to SC State 35-20.

SC State 43, Howard 13

Chris Massey caught two touchdown passes, and Wiliam Ford rushed for 108 yards and another score as the Bulldogs (8-1, 6-0) dominated the Bison (2-7, 0-6)  at Greene Stadium in Washington, D.C.

Massey caught scoring strikes of 14 and six yards from Malcolm Long.  Massey also tackled a Howard player in the end zone for a safety.

Ford scored on a 64-yard run late in the fourth quarter, nearly three minutes after teammate Phillip Adams returned an interception 71 yards for another score in the route.

The Bulldogs, ranked 10th in the FCS Coaches Poll, can win the MEAC title with a victory next Saturday against Morgan State or the following weekend versus North Carolina A&T.

Norfolk State 31, Morgan State 23

DeAngelo Branche caught a touchdown pass and ran for another to help the Spartans (5-4, 4-3) send the Bears (5-4, 3-3) to their third straight loss.

Chris Bell caught a 33-yard scoring toss from Dennis Bell and Josh Anderson returned an interception 62 yards for Norfolk State. 

Domanick West rushed for two touchdowns for the Bears, who,  until three weeks ago, were tied for the conference lead with South Carolina State.  Morgan State kicker Kemar Scarlett hit three field goals, including a 52-yarder to pull the Bears to within 28-23 in the fourth quarter.

Delaware State 24, Winston-Salem State 21
