Nathaniel Samas threw for two touchdowns and rushed for another as the Wildcats mauled the Golden Rams 35-13 in the 20th annual Fountain City Classic at A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium in Columbus Saturday.
Samas completed 16 of 26 passes for 281 and two touchdowns, but it was his one-yard run just before halftime that proved to be the game winner. It gave Fort Valley State (7-4, 6-3 SIAC) a 14-10 lead over Albany State (8-2, 7-2).
Samas, who was named the game's most valuable player, hit freshman Terrell Walker with a 41-yard strike in the second quarter for the Widcats' first lead, 7-3. He also connected with Rodriquez Render with 1:11 left in the third quarter and the rout was on.
Eleven seconds later, linebacker Trent Newton recovered a fumble on the ASU 20 and ran it in for another touchdown, making the score 281-10.
Safety Dajuan Williams completed the scoring when he intercepted Albany State quarterback A.J. McKenna for the third time and returned the ball 41 yards.
Albany State managed two field goals, including a 46-yarder in the second quarter, from Juan Bongarra and a 41-yard scoring toss from McKenna to Octavius Staton.
While Albany State still leads in the Fountain City Classic 15-5, Fort Valley State holds a 32-28-3 edge in the overall series between the SIAC foes.
Despite the loss, Albany State still made the Division II playoffs. The Golden Rams will host West Alabama Nov. 14 at noon in the sixth consecutive playoff appearance.
