Richard Medlin capped a 12-play, 88-yard drive with a three-yard scamper to give Fayetteville State its first lead of the 2009 CIAA Championship, one the Broncos would not relinquish.
The Broncos (8-3) rallied from a 10-0 halftime deficit to defeat Bowie State (6-5) 21-10 before a capacity crowd of 7,532 at Durham County Memorial Stadium for their third title in seven years.
Jamaal Dixon intercepted Bowie State's Tyrae Reid and ran it back 17 yards to seal the victory with 2:19 left to play. Fayetteville State scored 14 points in the fourth quarter and have outscored opponents 102-36 in the fourth quarter this season.
Benjamin Williams connected with Jamere Pugh for a 13-yard score to put the Broncos on the board in the third quarter. He took over quarterback duties in the second half and threw for 87 yards.
Bowie State, which won a three-way coin toss last week to represent the CIAA's eastern division, took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 10-yard run by freshman Ramono Flowers. Michael Gagne's 21-yard field in the second quarter gave Bowie State a 10-0 halftime lead and it looked as if the Broncos were on their way to their first CIAA title in 20 years.
Bowie State outgained Fayetteville State 272 yards to 220.
The Broncos will travel to Pennsylvania Saturday for a noon first-round playoff game against California (Pa.) University.
