Dominique McDuffie picked up a fumble and returned it 50 yards for the winning score as Appalachian State downed South Carolina State 20-13 in an NCAA Division I first-round playoff game in Boone, North Carolina Saturday.
The score had been tied 13-13 after Bulldogs kicker Blake Erickson hit his second field goal of the day, in the third quarter. It was the 10th consecutive victory for the Mountaineers after an 0-2 start.
This is the second year in a row that the Mountaineers (10-2), ranked no. 5 in the FCS Coaches Poll, eliminated the seventh-ranked Bulldogs (10-2) in the first round. Last year, ASU won 37-21 behind a school-record 433 passing yards from Armanti Edwards.
Edwards was barely half that good this time around, thanks to a tough SC State defense. He was also coming off a knee injury which forced him to sit out last week's win against Western Carolina. He completed 19 of 30 passes for 218 yards and a 7-yard touchdown to Brian Quick. However, he was also intercepted three times, including once by Rafael Bush who returned it 46 yards for SCSU's only touchdown.
ASU's defense also dominated the Bulldogs' offense, holding it to field goals of 31 and 19 yards by Erickson. Quarterback Malcolm Long was only 12-of-25 for 189 yards and was also picked off three times. William Ford, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference's all-time leading rusher, gained just 22 yards on eight carries.
