Much like Jim Tracy was recently named the Manager of the Year by his peers, Dan O’Dowd was named the Executive of the Year by his.
Hard to argue with either of these.
When looking at the starting roster of the Rockies in game one of the National League Division Series, it is easy to see why O’Dowd should be the Executive of the Year: the Rockies are littered with home grown talent. If you ask me that is the most important job of the GM, build an organization that can replenish its lost talent. Not so much sign big contracts, but build a minor league system that can sustain a team for years to come.
Dexter Fowler, Troy Tulowitzki, Clint Barmes, Brad Hawpe, Seth Smith, Chris Iannetta, Ubaldo Jimenez, Aaron Cook, Ian Stewart, Garrett Atkins, Ryan Spilborghs and Jeff Francis are the key names that have been drafted and developed under O’Dowd and his farm system.
Toss in key signings this year like Jason Giambi and big trades that worked well for the Rockies like the Jason Marquis or the Huston Street and Carlos Gonzalez trades and O’Dowd had a fine year.
The Sporting News article has some more good info on O’Dowd. I like how he brings up the Chone Figgins trade and how he got started in baseball.
