If you’ve been feeling the need to get involved and make a difference, or contribute your manpower to help others, you may want to look into volunteering. South Orange, NJ and the surrounding areas have many opportunities for you to use your skills, talents, strength and just plain muscle to make a difference.

One of the oldest and largest organizations in the country to assist people in need is Meals on Wheels (http://www.mowaa.org/Page.aspx?pid=183). The mission of this organization is to be there for senior citizens, providing them with meals. Opportunities to assist others abound with your local Veteran’s Affairs or VA Facility (http://www.eastorange.va.gov/giving/index.asp), where you can give your time to be a van driver, participate in the Dine and Chat program, or even bake cookies in the facility to provide a home feeling to patients. If using muscle to assist others is where you fit, then Habitat for Humanity (http://www.habitat.org/cd/local/affiliate.aspx?zip=07079) can always use volunteers to help build homes for those in need.

There are so many organizations and opportunities that you may not know just where to start. VolunteerMatch.com and Servenet.org are good points of reference. Both of these websites offer guidance by providing a search engine for individual volunteer opportunities, educators, organizations and corporate volunteers. They compile information based on your criteria, and provide you with a list of local needs. This makes it easy for a volunteer newbie to get started.

Taking the step to assist others will always yield rich rewards – for the volunteers and especially those being assisted.
