Today around the country there are several marathons being held, the most notable being the New York City Marathon. No one starts off being able to run a marathon, plus it takes countless hours to train for a marathon! If you'd like to start running then here's a program for you, the Couch to 5k program. It takes you just 30 minutes, three times a week for nine weeks, to work up to being someone who can run 30 minutes (or about 3.1 miles - a 5k) at a time!
It's much more practical to start training using intervals of walking and running to build your endurance and ease into a running routine. By easing into your running routine you are less likely to develop injuries or feel burnt out on a training program. Many people feel that the program might be too basic for their needs, but be sure to follow the program. If you feel that the program is too strenuous, feel free to repeat workouts and move on when you feel confident in your abilities.
Also be sure to space out your couch to 5k workouts evenly throughout the week to give your body ample time to recover. You can always incorporate cross training in your fitness regimen by trying one of these quick and easy workouts: Total Body Workouts, Equipment Free Exercises and Quick Core Workouts. By the end of this program you'll be in great shape and able to run for 30 minutes at a time, what a combination!
