AURORA, NY -- Like so many winemakers, the craft was learned at the knee of someone from an older generation.
In the case of Gary Barletta, he began making wine at an early age under the tutelage of his grandfather, a basement winemaker.
Barletta left the area to attend college -- Northwestern Oklahoma State University, to be precise -- but returned to his hometown to look for work.
While working at what now is the Cortland Regional Medical Center In Tompkins County, Gary met his future wife, Rosemary. When they set up housekeeping, part of the furnishings consisted of the winemaking equipment he had inherited from his grandfather.
Gary resumed his basement winemaking, quickly racking up a host of amateur winemaking awards. In January of 1999, he moved from amateur to professional status when construction began on what would become Long Point Winery. Today, Gary continues as chief winemaker, with Rosemary as the CEO of the company.
The winery, located on 72 acres of the section of Cayuga Lake after which it is named, has eight acres of vineyard that includes Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet Franc and Pinot Grigio grapes.
Long Point's wine list includes 16 wines, with a concentration on dry reds and whites. In addition to the expected wines -- Cab Franc, Cab Sayvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay -- the facility also produces such pleasant surprises as Ciera Rosé, a crisp, light wine with a mere 1.0 RS (residual sugar), and a raisin-y Sangiovese replete with dark fruit.
The winery, which also has a weekend deli named Amelia's, sits on Route 90 just south of the village of Aurora. Business hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday-Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Phone: (315) 364-6990.
