SODUS, NY -- Any time a winery goes up for sale in New York State's burgeoning industry, it's news. But sometimes it's difficult pinning down what's going on.
A posting on the New York Wine & Grape Foundation's (NYWGF) "Uncork NY" website under the headline "Winery for sale" reads:
6007 Lake Road in Sodus NY is an 11,600 sq ft building for sale or lease with the option to buy. It is a beautiful building and would make a great addition to the Lake Ontario Wine Trail. Please call Craig at 585-645-5599 for more information."
The building currently is not listed as being part of a winery. An online search shows it as being home to Cinelli's Country House Restaurant. Several calls to Craig Danzig at the number went to a recorded message that promised a return call. None has been forthcoming.
Jim Trezise, president of the NYWGF, told me today that he knew of no winery on the property and had no details on what the wording of the announcement meant.
The mention of the Lake Ontario Wine Trail refers to the state's newest such association. Go here for my report on it, and here for a rundown of all the state's wine trails.
