One of New York State's latest wine offerings is coming not from such well-known areas as the Finger Lakes or the North Fork, but from a little old place called Brooklyn.
The creator is the Red Hook Wine Company, which Mark Snyder founded in a 3,000-square-foot warehouse on Dwight Street that at one time was home to a bordello and at another an arms factory. Sort of The Big Bang Theory in all instances.
The company's first vintage consists of about 500 cases of Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, using only grapes grown on Long Island.
The Grocery in Carroll Gardens and Kevin’s in Red Hook are among the first restaurants to carry the wines.
They carry such Brooklyn-inspired names as "Seven In Heaven," a tribute to Red Hook firefighters who died on September 11, 2001.
Snyder, who grew up in Gerritsen Beach, has been a sound technician for such music stalwarts as Billy Joel and Peter Frampton.
