What do Miley Cyrus, Cindi Lauper, and Jennifer Hudson have in common?
It would be easier if the question was “What do Jennifer Hudson, Kelly Clarkson, and Jordin Sparks have in common?”
Either way, the answer has nothing to do with popularity or former American Idol contestant status. All of these women, as well as Adele, Leona Lewis, Sheryl Crow, Martina McBride, and Melissa Etheridge have been dubbed Divas by VH1 this year, and they will be performing at the TV station’s benefit concert next Thursday, September 17.
VH1 introduced their Divas concerts in 1998 as a fund raiser for their Save the Music foundation, which raises money to preserve and strengthen music education programs in public schools. The show ran annually until 2004. This will be the first time since then that a program has been organized.
Many are noticing, even criticizing, the fact that VH1 has clearly captured the attention of a younger audience by including such acts as Jordin and Miley, who do not have the longevity or vocal power of past artists, including Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. Lee Rolontz, one of Diva's executive producers, however, defends the younger women.
"Don’t let some of their young ages fool you — these women are among the best entertainers in the world and will continue to thrill music fans for a long time to come,” he says.
Does he have a point, or is this just a transparent attempt to pander to younger viewers and boost slipping ratings?
Either way, American Idol should be proud to have produced so much talent that can be dubbed Diva-worthy.
Paula Abdul, fresh off her eight year stint on Idol, will also be present to host the evening’s festivities.
