Last night's VH1 Divas concert was one part British pop stars, one part 90s stars who haven't done anything in awhile, one part girls who are really too young to be considered "divas," one large part American Idol alumni, and a slight mish mosh of various others.
The scene stealer of the night, though, was Paula Abdul in her first major appearance since she left Idol. Aside from hosting the night, Paula got to grace the stage with a medly of her 80s standards. She lipsynced through the entire performance, but after her last two years' worth of performances on Idol, could anything else really be expected? She still dances well, minus her minor snafu during "Straight Up," where she stumbled a bit. Ever the professional, though, Paula stood right up and kept on dancing as though nothing had almost gone wrong. By far, the highlight of the performance was the image of Simon Cowell that stood behind Paula as she pretended to sing "Opposites Attract." Though this evoked a chuckle after all of their feuding, it's interesting to think that Paula's career is still defined by her now former job.
Later in the evening, Paula took the audience by surprise as she danced down the isle to Pink's "Get This Party Started" in an Ellen DeGeneres-esque wig and suit. Her portrayal of her replacement continued as she climbed onto the stage and slung herself into an arm chair. Paula's intent remains ambiguous - was she being playful of spiteful? - though she did conclude her charrade by saying,
"All kidding aside, nothing but love, Ellen. I wish you the best of luck and congratulations on the new gig! And you've got to call me if you have any Simon problems, because I know him best."
Paula's words did indeed sound sincere. Hopefully leaving Idol won't be something she'll regret in the coming months.
This morning, Ellen tweeted a response to Paula's words from last night, saying,
"Paula, you're hilarious. You've left me some big shoes to fill…unfortunately I don't wear high heels. Nothing but love for you too."
Funny stuff. Here's hoping that the humor stays clean as Idol season approaches.
For those of you who missed the VH1 Divas concert, it will be aired again on Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. Tune in for performances from Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, Jordin Sparks, and more!
