What happened between Taylor Swift and Kanye West at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night is old news by now. Taylor Swift won the Best Female Video category, and Kanye West waltzed up on stage, stole the microphone from her, and declared, "I'm sorry, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time!" Though Kanye is notorious for outbursts at awards ceremonies, this one shocked audience members more than usual as it was an attack on another artist (instead of his usual overblown statements about himself), and he was booed off stage.
Kanye has met with a slew of criticism from fellow celebrities, including Idol veterans. Kellie Pickler, who is famously friends with Taylor, voiced her disgust via Twitter. "Tator Tot, you handled yourself with Grace. Kanye, go grow some f-ing balls, bi—! don’t mess w/my lil sis!!” she wrote.
America's initial Idol, Kelly Clarkson, was so outraged that she wrote a massive blog entry in which she thoroughly divulged her dislike of Kanye. A taste of the entry: I’ve seen you do some pretty sh—y things, but you just keep amazing me with your tactless, a–hole ways. It’s absolutely fascinating how much I don’t like you.” Read the rest here for some more deep thoughts on the matter.
Even President Obama has unofficially weighed in on the issue, saying of Kanye, "He's a jacka--." It doesn't get much lower than being called nasty names by the president of the United States.
While Kanye is receiving these castigations from fellow musicians, the true effect of his statement won't be seen until a new single or album or video is released. Will his need to have things go his way at any cost cost him some of his popularity, or will this be an incident that is laughed at five years from now - "That crazy Kanye, at it again! Haha!"?
Whether you're a fan of Taylor or not, what Kanye did to her was, in the words of Kelly Clarkson, "pretty sh—y."
