L. Nowlin Gallery will be hosting the new photography exhibition by Robert Shults, "The Small Corners of Existence" November 3, 2009 - January 2, 2010. The Opening Reception is November 7: 6-8pm with catering by Cafe Josie. A portion of the proceeds from each print sold during this exhibition will benefit Front Steps, administrators of the Austin Resource Center for the Homeless. Robert Shults, Lesley Nowlin, and Dawn Perkins from Front Steps were interviewed by KUT's Julie Moody which will be aired Monday, November 2nd (time TBA). Also, look for Robert's story in this month's edition of Austin Monthly.
Robert Shults - The Small Corners of Existence
Upon moving to Austin in 2001, Shults found himself homeless in a new city. He spent several months finding his way off the streets, and eventually succeeded in doing so. In 2007, Shults learned he would be laid-off from his teaching job. He was met with an old anxiety he had experienced not so long before. Inspired by this, Shults returned to the spaces he once used for shelter and began photographing them. His body of work explores the often overlooked spaces that for some act as temporary physical and spiritual shelter.

A portion of the proceeds from each print sold during this exhibition will benefit Front Steps, administrators of the Austin Resource Center for the Homeless. The ARCH serves as the first point of entry into the homeless service system for many of Austin’s homeless residents, providing shelter, basic needs, comprehensive support services, and linkages to community providers to over 8,000 homeless adults annually. Front Steps also manages the Central Texas Recuperative Care Center, a collaboration with St. David’s Community Health Foundation and the St. David’s and Seton hospital systems. Homeless clients who are too sick to be discharged to a shelter or the streets, but not sick enough to warrant acute hospital placement, are placed in a nursing home for the duration of their illness. Front Steps provides intensive case management to address income, housing, and self-care needs.
