Green Fairy at Dr. Sketchy'sFor many years I was beginning to think to myself, as an artist, that every single life drawing class I went to would pretty much be the same: A bored-looking naked person posed on a platform draped in cloth in a large, quiet room full of people sitting in chairs with their sketch pads. Not that there is anything wrong with the traditional setting of the much needed life drawing class. However, artists crave the "different". They crave settings and experiences which intrigue their minds and cause their creativity to race out of control across their souls with wild anarchial abandon. Hence the establishment of the fabulous Dr. Sketchy life drawing sessions in 2005 where "cabaret meets art school"!

Now present in Austin, New York, Berlin, Edinburgh, Toronoto, Auckland, London, Melbourne, Rome, Tokyo and Hollywood, Dr. Sketchy is a life drawing class which presents remarkably innovative and tantilizing models in a relaxed, cool bar environment. Here in Austin, the sessions take place at a different location each month, the place reserved being transformed from a mere drawing session into a cabaret extravaganza! For $10, artists are given access to models such as burlesque dancers, carnies and fetish divas modeling elaborate costumes. During breaks between poses, the artists may compete for free booze and other prizes! Groovy music and sassy emcees accompany and guide the experience along, making a simple life drawing class feel like a trip to the Twilight Zone. The problem is, once you've been, no other drawing class will ever live up to your newly heightened standards!

Dr. Sketchy was founded in Brooklyn, New York by the now world-famous artist and burlesque dancer Molly Crabapple. Since it's first event, the life drawing group has achieved world domination with over 30 international branches. Molly Crabapple and John Leavitt have also completed several other accompanying projects such as the Dr. Sketchy's Official Rainy Day Colouring Book, published by Sepulculture Books and the "Dr. Sketchy's Radio Free Radio", internet radio station, a pin-up calendar, a presence at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art Show, a gallery show of the best art produced by attending artists around the world.

If you're tired of the same old sterile, lifeless life drawing experience then it's time for you to experience Dr. Sketchy! More information about the sessions, and to locate one in your area, can be found online at www.drsketchys.com. More information on the Austin Dr. Sketchy's group can be located online at www.austinsketchy.com.

The next life drawing session is currently scheduled for April 19th from 5-8pm at the Art Authority Building. A special Special SXSW Dr. Sketchy will also be doing a guest session at the Pastries and Pasties Party during SXSW this Friday night (March 13th) at Emos.
