Sure, this isn't New York. That shouldn't mean that we can't get a good slice around here though. It's general knowledge that authentic pies are pretty hard to find in the DMV area which is why the few out there have been written about many times and are old favorites. There is one place though, located right in Arlington that's been flying under the pizza radar.

Right on the corner of South 23rd Street, Cafe Pizzaiolo sits in the middle of Crystal City's best. Maybe that's why it's been able to keep its humble status, but once you get a piece of either the NY style ("crunchy crust with a slight chew") or Neapolitan ("light & crispy"), you'll never forget it.

The space is small but cozy and very inviting. You can bring the kids because they have board games to keep them busy while the pizza's in the oven and even better, they can choose from the gelato display for dessert. The ambiance is casual and noise level gets pretty chatty.

The food is all around great but make sure to try the Bella pizza (either crust). One bite in and you'll forget you're in Virginia.

For more information and to view the full menu, visit Cafe Pizzaiolo, 507 S. 23rd St., Arlington, 703.894.2250.
