At this past Saturday night's Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers event, Brett "The Grim" Rogers took on a fighter who is largely considered as not only the best heavyweight in the world, but the best heavyweight in the history of mixed martial arts: Fedor "The Last Emperor" Emelianenko. After cutting Emelianenko's nose open with the first strike of the fight, Rogers exceeded all expectations by later landing some of the fiercest ground and pound that the Russian fighter has ever faced. It was experience that aided Emelianenko and helped carry him to the second round where "The Last Emperor" dropped Rogers with a single blow; the fight was quickly stopped shortly after by the referee as Emelianenko pounced on the dazed Rogers, landing a series of follow-up blows.
Following the fight it was reported that Emelianenko was taken to the hospital where he was treated for a fractured nose and tendon damage in his left thumb. While Strikeforce had previously suggested that the winners of both Emelianenko/Rogers and Werdum/Silva would face off against one another in their next fight, it is uncertain as to what exactly is on tap for Emelianenko as he will be out for the next four to six months while his injuries heal.
