During Keith Olbermann's Worst Person in the World segment on November 3rd, topping the list was Glenn Beck and his 9/12 movement-- who according to the 9/12 Project website is a group of "like-minded Americans looking for direction in taking back the control of our country".
On Glenn Beck's November 2nd program, Beck made the vivid analogy comparing what he feels is an imminent health care reform disaster to that of the 9/11 tragedy.
BECK: "You see, gang, in Washington, the party is over. In the 1990s, I was on the radio warning people about Osama bin Laden, not because I was some super-smart genius. I just listened to the man's words. I really believed him.
But that wasn't the top of the priority list in America -- no, no, no. We were dealing with the fat interns and the definition of is, and I like the rest of America went back to sleep on the terrorist threat.
On 9/11, we experienced a feeling we had never had before, when the buildings and the markets and our economy came falling down around our ears, we realized, "Oh, my gosh, our country isn't unsinkable." We came, on that day, to the understanding that this republic is fragile.
And here we are now, a decade later, I'm on the air again, warning you that America cannot sustain our government's massive spending. The system will collapse if they continue down this progressive path.
Ten years ago, I could have shouted every single day about Osama bin Laden and his wacky, crazy threats to kill Americans in New York and no one would have been willing to stand in line two hours while some security officer made grandma taker her shoes off. No one would have done it.
But don't you see, while the government is still not willing to do these things, today America is different. America has changed.
Washington, we're not going to let you get away with it anymore. Look, fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
Conservatives are awake -- 9/12ers are willing to do the hard things. We know what this means! We're taking time out of our busy lives, taking time away from their families. They're attending town hall meetings. Do you think they want to do that?
They are calling their representatives. How many times do we have to be yelled at by your people in Washington? They are reading 2,000-page health care bills on the weekend. The 9/12ers are willing to stand in line and take our shoes off before the plane actually hits the tower."
For Olbermann at MSNBC, Beck's choice of words, well, inspired Olbermann to employing his own choice words.
"Beck, you and the 9/12ers have the nerve to exploit 9/11 for your lousy TV ratings? You cannot make light of 9/11, nor bandy about as if your petty political grievances are comparable to it and still be an actual, patriotic American. In short, Glenn, 9/12ers, if you're invoking 9/11 just to oppose health care reform, go to hell."
Those who may take offense to being told by Keith Olbermann to go to hell, you may be consoled by the fact that you're not alone. In January 17th of last year, Olbermann also told news commentators, politicians, and military officers to go to hell as well.
"The men who ordered them back, in the military, and outside of it, are the ones who accuse those who criticize them of hating the troops or of being anti-American. And frankly, those politicians, those commentators, and those senior officers can go to hell." -- Keith Olbermann
