Delta-Montrose Electric Association (DMEA) is now accepting applications for the 2010 National Rural Electric Association Youth Tour. Students from area high schools, alternative schools and home schools are invited to participate.

The Association chooses one student each year to travel with the Tour to Washington D.C. in June. The student will join more than 1,500 other high school youth from across the country in representing America's electric cooperatives. Along with attending educational seminars, tour members will visit national museums and monuments and meet with their representatives in the Senate and the House.

In order to apply, students must:

  • be at least 16 years of age and still in high school
  • live in  a home  receiving power from Delta-Montrose Electric Association
  • submit a 250-word essay, free-hand drawing, computer generated graphic, 10-15 minute video, photograph, or any other creative and original work relating to electricity

Students chosen as runners-up will be eligible to attend the Colorado Rural Electric Association's Youth Leadership Camp in Clark, Colorado this July.

Applications can be picked up from any area high school guidance counsellor or from Ryan Henn (240-1210/ ryan.henn@dmea.com.)  Applications can also be downloaded.

According to Mr. Henn, this is an excellent opportunity for any interested student, especially since so far there have only been about 5-10 applicants each year. In his experience, the students returning from the tour have come back as "changed persons," having made lifelong friends.

Return completed applications by mail no later than 5 p.m. Monday,  Jan. 4 to : Ryan Henn, Delta-Montrose Electric Association, P.O. Box 910, Montrose, CO 81402.
