The newly formed Vegas Telugu Association (VeTA) held its first Diwali celebration on Saturday, October 24 at the Garden Community Center in Las Vegas. Attended by several hundred people, the event showcased performances by local families as well as lectures and information on future events. It was a definite success for an organization formed only three months ago in July.

Named for the language spoken in the Indian State of Andra Pradesh, VeTA marks the first regionalized Indian cultural organization in Las Vegas. The organization’s primary goals are to:

  • Educate their children about their heritage
  • Teach the language of Telugu
  • Bring the Indian community together through cultural events
  • Assist Indian international students in assimilating to U.S. life
  • Charitable activities to benefit both Indian and U.S. causes
  • Bring notable Indian Artists to Las Vegas

Just how strong this community is was proven in October, when over 2000 lbs of clothes were gathered and shipped to flood victims in Southern India. “The Indian community has definitely grown from about 10-15 families to several hundred families today,” says Kalyan Sudha, master of ceremonies at Saturday’s event.

It is their hope that VeTA will continue to grow along with the community. With the success of their past events, they are surely on their way.
