The Center for Improving Schools released data that show Anaheim City School District is in its third year of Program Improvement. Anaheim City School District serves only elementary schools in the central Anaheim area.
Many of its schools were labeled "at-risk," which means that the school is not yet in Program Improvement, but is on the borderline. Those schools are: James M. Guinn, Thomas Jefferson, Francis Scott Key, Olive Street, Adelaide Price, and Stoddard Elementary.
Other school sites entered their first year of Program Improvement. They are: Loara, Orange Grove, Betsy Ross, and Westmont Elementary. These schools may offer parents the option to transfer their students to another district school that is not in Program Improvement, with transportation provided.
Schools in their third year of Program Improvement include: Thomas Edison, Patrick Henry, Benito Juarez, Abraham Lincoln, and Paul Revere Elementary. These schools will offer extensive professional training programs for the staff, and may even offer tutoring programs to students from low-income families.
Those schools in their fifth year of Program Improvement are Melbourne A. Gauer and Palm Lane Elementary schools. If a school has not made adequate yearly progress in four years, it could face significant restructuring or takeover in the fifth year. Schools that do not receive Title I funds are not subject to Program Improvement, even if they do not make adequate yearly progress.
Once a school site is in Program Improvement, it is very difficult to exit. However, 9 Orange County schools exited Program Improvement this year, a huge accomplishment for the county's public schools.
