One coffee shop not to miss is Claire’s on Cedros. This unique café-bakery has been all the rage in Solana Beach, on the design district street of Cedros, since opening their doors just this last August. Over the last couple months the popularity has sky-rocketed and there are really about a million reasons why. One of its many charms is the outside looks like a tiny house rather than a café, and has all the comforts of home as well. You feel like you are pulling up to an old friend’s place when you arrive. In fact it’s even a little hard to find as it somewhat blends in with the other homes on the block. This place is packed from the minute its doors open, especially on any given weekend. If you arrive any time after noon finding a table is much easier. The welcoming waitresses greet you at the entrance always with a smile, and always making you feel as though you’ve known each other for years. You can either sit in the dining area or order a coffee drink, tea or baked good at the walk up café bar. The dinning area offers a full menu of healthy, scrumptious breakfast and lunch items, all homemade with locally grown products – from sweet pastries and savory omelets to incredible soup, sandwich or salad options. But the thing that makes this place so special, besides the tasty, organic, food, sweet, rich deserts (try the chocolate brownie – you won’t regret it!) and wonderful espresso bar is that almost everything is green. Not literally the color green (although there are a lot of pleasing green color tones), but almost the whole café and nearly everything in it is made from recycled or reused materials – from the table tops to the floors to the unique decorations. Even recycled blue-jeans insulate the walls and ceiling. A chandelier made from old fashioned egg whisks hangs over the café bar and little lamps adorn the walls, made from recycled metal wires to look like bird’s nests with sweet fake birds inside to give an outdoorsy feel. The garden outside is 90% edible and has little labels of everything growing. The surroundings are a huge conversation piece and every time you go, you notice some other intriguingly rare quality, like the flooring detail in the restroom made from recycled windshields and wine and beer bottles. Claire’s also offers free WIFI if you need to get online while enjoying the calming surroundings and delicious treats. Constant praise is given to the waitresses, owners and designers. Locals have already become “regulars”, and the tranquil, natural, friendly, warm atmosphere on top of the appetizing food and drinks are good reasons to go and experience it for yourself.
