These Halloween safety tips will keep your trick or treaters safe photo/AP

Trick or treating is one of the most important parts of celebrating Halloween .  To make sure that your children have a safe time trick or treating this Halloween, make sure to follow these three, important Halloween safety tips and rules.

1) The first Halloween safety rule is to make sure your child is aware of their surroundings.  Being careful in the dark, being cautious of traffic and trying to get most of trick-or-treating in when it’s still light out are three very important parts Halloween safety.  A great rule for trick or treating is to make sure your kids carry a cell phone and give you a game plan of where they are planning their Halloween trick or treating.  Have them call every so often to let you know how they are.

2) Another great Halloween trick or treating safety tip is to travel in groups.  A general safety rule is that it’s always best to travel in a large crew.  Also make sure your child has their “Accountability-buddy”, which is a partner that keeps tabs on them and vice versa.  There’s safety in numbers and for younger kids, that group should include an adult.

3) The most important Halloween trick or treating safety rule and tip is to make sure your kids do not eat candy before you have a chance to check it.  Pack a snack for your child and instruct them not to eat any of their treats until they’re home. When checking the Halloween candy, look for evidence of tampering; anything that looks weird should be tossed immediately. Let kids know they shouldn’t snack when they’re walking. Giving them a stash of Halloween candy from home or a bag of pretzels to munch on will make them less likely to pull from their trick or treat bundle and wait until they get home.
