Early Friday morning, a crudely built cross-border tunnel was discovered by Border Patrol agents in Otay Mesa, CA after surveillance cameras observed a large group of suspected illegal aliens attempting to enter the country, according to a report obtained by the 14,000-member National Association of Chiefs of Police

At about 12:45 a.m., Border Patrol surveillance camera operators observed several individuals in Mexico running up to the primary border fence about one mile west of the Otay Mesa port of entry.

About 30 minutes later, the camera operators spotted two people north of the border fence, while a third person was following by crawling out of a hole in the ground. Agents responded and were able to apprehend one of the individuals, as the other two re-entered the hole and returned to Mexico.

Agents investigated and discovered a poorly braced tunnel from Mexico into the United States, approximately 15 yards long, traveling under the border road, and opening near a drainage ditch. It was suspected that the illegal aliens were attempting to then sneak through a storm drain in the drainage ditch to further their entry.

This tunnel was the second tunnel discovered in the Otay Mesa area in just over a month. On February 21, a cross-border tunnel was found connected to a storm drain near Via de la Amistad, less than one-quarter of a mile east of the Otay Mesa port of entry.
